Dumbarton Harbour development calls time on landmark distillery tower
A landmark distillery tower which dominates Dumbarton town centre is to be felled to make way for a waterfront housing development for Dunbritton Housing Association.

Developer Cullross has already begun demolition of the red brick edifice ahead of construction in the spring of a mixed-use development comprising 196 homes, office and commercial accommodation on the site of the former Ballantine’s Distillery, Dumbarton.

JM Architects have been appointed as designer for the scheme which will plug into a wider walkway stretching from the town centre to Dumbarton Rock.

In a statement the developer said: “The project architect, JM Architects, had a challenge on their hands to design around the site constraints. The site is not straight forward, due it its historical uses as a distillery and shipyard before that, so we had to get to know the site extremely well. Our engineers, Will Rudd Davidson, have advised on all aspects of the design, ensuring that our proposals are capable of being built within budget constraints.“

It is expected that the first homes will be ready for occupation by summer 2018.

West Dunbartonshire Council are currently progressing a new headquarters within the A-listed Academy Building on Church Street.

Missed opportunity. This is site in the shadow of Scotlands most important castle. The football ground is also going to be housing. Instead a new entrance to the castle should have been created facing the town with an esplanade for public events. This could be connected to the Dunbritton site which offered a real opportunity to build a new colourful little Antwerp which would have been a real draw to make Dumbarton a must see place instead of it being the third most disadvantaged place in Scotland

Good to see all the hard work and effort expended by Cooper Cromar a few years back hasn't gone unnoticed
