£5m Springburn housing development proposed
A brownfield site in Springburn town centre is being targeted by AS Homes for delivery of a £5m development of 40 flats for social rent.

Located on Springburn Way the George Buchanan Architects scheme will offer all two-bedroom flats spread across two four storey blocks using timber framing to minimise build times and maximise energy efficiencies.

Paul Kelly, managing director of AS Homes commented: “This development will provide high-quality, modern and energy-efficient affordable rented accommodation for the Springburn area, while bringing an empty site back into use.”

Apparently it's still 1982, then. That eaves/gable detail is particularly dispiriting.

Do the terms brownfield and social housing now equate with banal unimaginative buildings? Will an architect please step forward to give the less fortunate in our city buildings and public spaces they deserve.

A more imaginative roofscape might have saved this. Maybe. Just lazy.

While it is a welcome infill for a long-standing gap-site on the old Springburn Road and of appropriate density, it is a rather perfunctory design. It would have been exciting to have seen a more original interpretation of the tenemental form or indeed reinstatement of a more traditional sandstone design in what is a shattered local streetscape.

Glasgow CC must resist this if they are to take the SG Placemaking seriously and not make a mockery of the PPF return to the SG ( Planning a Performance Framework ).
