Trio of Merchiston townhouses proposed
Block 9 Architects have brought forward plans to build three townhouses on land off Bruntsfield Terrace, behind a C-listed villa in Edinburgh’s Merchiston and Greenhill conservation area.

This would see the current building converted back to residential use through subdivision into three flats, with a 1980’s extension to the rear demolished to make way for a further three townhouses.

In their design statement the architects noted: “The external elevations express the change in geometry which the Townhouse concept was based upon. A strong deep masonry base ties the Townhouses in with the scale of the stone boundary walls to the site, whilst the upper floors to the courtyard elevation are cantilevered boxes which provide a large feature window to the 1st floor Bedroom and a balcony to the 2nd floor bedroom of the middle and East Townhouse.”

Formed from a mix of Western Red Cedar, white render and brickwork the townhouses are set well back from the road to avoid having any detrimental effect on the conservation area.

Mmmmm bit of a backlands development non....not too encouraged by the white render, brick AND the dreaded w r cedar chat...thought we dropped this pick n' mix approach back in '98.
