Excavations commence for Kirkintilloch Town Hall extension
CBC has commenced excavation work for a Michael Laird Architects designed extension to Kirkintilloch Town Hall, as part of a full refurbishment of the decaying landmark.

This work will see the current hall converted to an events and exhibition space with enhanced circulation, facilities and access dovetailing with public realm improvements to Union Street.

To one side a two storey extension housing grade A office space will be added to the mix, contrasting with the heavy blonde sandstone of the town hall through use of a lightweight dark grey aluminium frame and inverted solid to window ratio.

In their design statement the architects observed: “Extending a ‘frame’ over the façade picks up the key datum’s on the old building and provides an appropriate scale relationship. Overall, the proportions of the new should be vertically expressed.

“The connection space is set back between the buildings and expressed as an obvious ‘gap.’”

I love the butterfly wings on the car, almost makes up for the sterile business park aesthetic.

Looks lack a clumsy rip-off of Elder & Cannon's Shettleston HA offices.

Clearly the wrong demographic has been illustrated.
I can testify that there are no YOUNG people in Kirkintilloch. And in any case, this is all very ageist.

Not sure if this will do anything to dissuade the makers of the Fallout computer game series from setting their next post-apocalyptic saga there.
