Contractors move in on Edinburgh student accommodation

This will entail conversion and refurbishment of two B-listed tenement blocks in the Southside conservation area to provide 246 bedrooms alongside the construction of four new build blocks offering a further 138 rooms.
Adopting a contemporary interpretation of the traditional tenement using a palette of stone, zinc and glass this latter element will include a warden’s flat, landscaped courtyards, an energy centre and common facilities.
Graham Construction’s regional director Neil McFarlane, said: “… the two-part dimension of refurbishing existing premises on site coupled with a new build construction poses an interesting challenge – one the team is looking forward to.”
Completion is expected by summer 2017.

Eh? Am i missing something? At least the existing building next door has some detail on its main elevation ..... the chud pipes are at least a welcome additional. This is flat and bland ..... but it does have some timber cladding so ......

Looks as is if two buildings have fused together in an awkward gable arrangement- a bland tennement and a bland office.
Ground floor looks squished too....to sneak in extra storey I assume.

Infinitely preferable to the dross design that usually passes for student res. I would take 'flat' and 'bland' but contextual projects such as meadow lane over projects like the Y&G Central House monstrosity on Jamaica Street any day.

A tricky site as I recall with mews and tenement coming together. I think the gable end treatment works well.
