Awkward Edinburgh gap-site to make way for 150-bed hotel
CDA Architects have submitted plans for a 150 bedroom hotel at Torpichen Street, Edinburgh, on behalf of Axcel Hospitality.

The brownfield spot will be given over to a new hotel designed to act as a ‘stepping stone’ between existing Georgian properties and the 13 storey Exchange office tower on a restricted plot limited by the presence of railway tunnels, adopting a ground floor pavilion over the affected ground to maintain the building line.

In their design statement CDA observed: “It is intended that the ground floor is expressed through a different treatment in glazing and material. This is inline with the requirements of the hotel brand but also allows the character of the internal space to be read externally.

"The glazing shall extend around the corner and along Dewar Place, providing transparency through the streetscape corner and a visual link from Torphichen Street through to Dewar Place.”

Faced with ashlar sandstone to the front and render to rear elevations with a granite base and pre-patinated zinc on the upper two levels the seven storey block includes floor to ceiling glazing at ground level to enhance street activation.
A curved frontage will sweep round from Torpichen Street to Dewar Place

An attractive well thought out design that fits with its setting. The canopy over the entrance is a good idea for guests waiting for taxis and I guess smoking.

Yikes! Well, I salute CDA for the consistency of their design philosophy.

Yes, great new for smokers and taxi queues...
Nice corner radius...the rest, especially view two is bland at best. C'mon lads, pull the finger out!

Is the important view not the one up Torphichen Street from Haymarket?
Should the corner not be celebrated rather than the elevation treatment just bent round the corner?
C'mon lads, pull the finger out!

Well the purpose of a hotel is for people to have a good nights sleep, one look at that facade and they'll be lucky if they don't slip into a month long coma...

Wish the trees (that have been meaninglessly placed) could be taller in order to hide that facade.
