CDA push ahead with plans for 100 Granton homes
CDA Architects have submitted plans for 100 homes at Waterfront Avenue, Edinburgh, on behalf of Places for People, phase one of a larger 300 home development.

Finished in a palette of white and grey brick with front entrances and balconies defined by a dark grey metal-clad portal frame the scheme seeks to slot into the existing context, defined by Saltire Square.

In their design statement the architects observed: “The corner apartment building will present a strong frontage onto Saltire Square and Waterfront Avenue, and act as the connecting piece between the two terraces of townhouses.

“The primary material used will be a mixture of white and grey brick cladding, with the white brick being used for the seven storey section of the building, and the light grey brick used on the five storey section. Features such as entrance canopies and balcony edging picked out with dark grey metal cladding.

“The recessed balconies will be softened using dark stained timber strip panels. Balcony areas will be finished with galvanised paint finished mild steel balustrades painted dark grey to match the window frames.”

Landscaping work will be undertaken by Rankin Fraser.

Good stuff - this site has languished empty for far too long, and it'll be good to see something with urban presence here following the exceptional standard set by Saltire Street.

Mmm, could be much better though eh? Pretty basic and the horizontal proportions on apartment façade are waaaay too thick. Rear view of townhouses is a shocker....are these actually the images they submitted for planning!? Looks like they just couldn't be 4rsed....

Welcome news. Saltire Square has been a grim unfinished blot for too long. I'm just hoping the above images are a 'work in progress'.

I also feel sad, where is the joy, the elegance?
why the formulaic?

The simple fact is the vast majority of the general public are not willing to pay the extra money for elegance or Joy within their living environments.
Formulaic or Standardisation delivers cost benefits which they do value.
Before anyone comes out with the old “we need to educate them” that just makes our profession look pompous and even more out of touch with the mood of the general public.
