Classes begin at new Fort William Primary school
Classes have got underway at the £10m Lundavra Primary School, Fort William, following handover by Graham Construction.

Situated above Loch Linnhe the 11 classroom school has absorbed rolls from the former Fort William and Upper Achintore Primaries and includes a multi-purpose hall.

Designed by Highland Council’s housing & property services department the school sits in an established residential area to the south of the town centre.

In their design statement the council said: “The school sits on the fringes of a wild environment, as a sympathetic and appropriate addition to the locale, set within a varied and stimulating landscape. The building occupies a very particular site and accommodation has been arranged to take advantage of its splendid outlook.

“The building is best understood as a composite of three main built elements –nursery flank, school wing and civic block. Fronting these elements is a new public space, while a stimulating and diverse play environment ranges around the lower lochside elevations.”

Additional services including early year’s education, out of school care, additional needs provision and community facilities are also offered.

What is not noted in the above text is the building was delivered by 3DReid Architects in Edinburgh. The complex roof geometrys, multiple roof terraces and semi submerged nature of the build made this a particularly tricky building to detail. We are delighted at the outcome and how close to the original design drawings the finished product was.

This looks like a warehouse.

I absolutely loathe those stones-in-cages walls. WHAT is all that about?

Gabions are nothing new. Leo Da'Vinci designed some. They have been used for centuries.
I like them.
