Stranraer Gateway opens up town’s waterfront
AHR have unveiled the first in a series of new gateway pavilions on the outskirts of Stranraer, Dumfries & Galloway, designed to help revitalise the seaside town following the relocation of its ferry terminal to nearby Cairnryan.

The cantilevered pavilion sits next to a revitalised café on the shores of Loch Ryan and is intended to provide shelter from the elements whilst offering a panoramic outlook for visitors.

This work saw the re-cladding and weatherproofing of an existing café in Scottish larch with a raised timber deck providing pavilion access for the disabled. Designed to weather to a silver grey colour in time the timber was chosen for its robustness and low-maintenance requirements.

Greg Meikle, landscape architect at AHR, commented: “We have been delighted with the transformation of what was an unremarkable café layby stop into a much more appealing location worthy of a stop and refreshment. The quality of workmanship by the local contractor has been exemplary and we feel that for a relatively modest outlay the client has gained a place of real interest.”

This work follows extensive public realm improvements to the town centre and moves to develop a new East Pier.
