Yeoman McAllister draw up Cramond care home plan
September 14 2015
Yeoman McAllister Architects have submitted plans for a new care home on behalf of the Care Concern Group at 18 Whitehouse Road, Edinburgh, within the Cramond Conservation Area.Sporting a rendered exterior with timber cladding and reconstituted stone detailing the 61 bedroom facility is located within an established residential neighbourhood, facing a steep wooded embankment down to the River Almond.
In a statement the architects said: “A simple palette of quality materials, detailing and openings promote a sense of unity across the scheme. The coherent design also helps the development sit comfortably in the surrounding area, building lines are adopted from the context, with attention paid to massing and ridge heights from many principal adjacent buildings.”
An unlisted detached home dating from the 1960s/70s set within 0.48 hectares of land will be demolished to make way for the scheme.

Am I alone in thinking that the architect's 'Design Statement' bears little resemblance to the proposed scheme? CADMonkey has hit the nail on the head.

Hmm....
1. In a conservation area so lets ignore the character of slate pitched roofs and villas -check
2. Its pretty big and bulky - lets make it all look like grass - check
3. Its a nursing home for the elderly but the site is long and thin - tough, make them walk and get lost - check
4. It needs a lift and a lift over run - who cares - make no attempt to disguise it and punch it through the flat roof - check
5. Access - I know the access arrangements are dodgy, substandard and at a busy junction with a children's nursery, and an overloaded single track street for the exit-who cares pump in the application and see if highways say OK! It should be fine - check
6. Materials - lets call render, timber cladding, brick and felt roof "quality materials" - nobody will notice the detail - check
7. Refuse collection....there wont be much rubbish - check
