Construction gets underway at new Duns Primary School
Scottish Borders Council has given the final go ahead for construction to commence on a new £8.6m Duns Primary School within the former Berwickshire High School building, including a support centre for children with special needs.

Conversion of the B-listed building will be undertaken by Graham Construction to designs by Aitken Turnbull Architects, with completion expected in early 2017, creating a new education campus alongside a new high school built over the road.

In their design statement Aitken Turnbull observed that limited space requirements and cost constraints meant that the best course of action was to preserve as much of the existing school as possible.

The practice stated: “Although it is unfortunate that some of the original structure will be lost, it is considered that this is justified in order to preserve the main part of the building and the imposing south facing frontage on Langtongate.”

A 1980s extension will also be retained to accommodate a new nursery.
Numerous surplus extensions to the rear will be demolished
