EMA Architects table 139 home Abbeyhill development
EMA Architects have submitted plans for the replacement of two large warehouses on an 8 hectare site off Abbey Lane, Edinburgh, with 139 apartments in a series of four and six storey blocks for Bellway.

In their design statement EMA noted: “The design will reinforce the urban fabric of the surrounding area and create a place with character and identity with high quality positive street frontages and maximum permeability and encourage social interaction. The massing and urban form will work well with the immediate surroundings and adjoining sites which are likely to be developed in the future.”

A landscape buffer will be included to the south to mitigate the impact of an adjoining railway line, including a mixture of hedges, railings, walls and footpaths.

Looks a little cheaply done.. Does any of it respond to the amazing view of Arthur Seat behind the site?

#2, that ain't no hot air balloon - it's a desk fan that I chucked oot ma penthoose windae at the car that's parked in ma space! That'll teach em.

#2 and #3 if we are feeling particularly gracious to EMA, the hot air balloon could be a witty reference to James Tytler who was the first person in Britain to ascend in a hot air balloon back in 1784. He did it in this part of Edinburgh just across the railway line from the site, hence nearby developments being named after him, Tytler Court and Tytler Gardens.
