Sauchiehall Street workshop to address future of the famous avenue

On hand will be urban planner Nick Wright and Riccardo Marini, director with Gehl Architects, who will be on hand to help develop proposals for how the thoroughfare can best meet these challenges.
Sauchiehall Street forms part of the city council’s new districts strategy which aims to focus resources on streets with unique character and specialisms.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, commented: “The Sauchiehall District is a hugely important part of the city centre, featuring some of Scotland’s leading academic and cultural institutions, as well as large business and residential communities. As part of our proposals for the city centre for the next decade, we want everyone with stake in the future of the district to set the agenda by coming along to this and other events over the next few months.”
We Are Sauchiehall will take place between 15:00 and 17:00 on 3 March within The Piping Centre.

I'm sorry but why would anybody bother engaging with a consultation like this when GCC so brazenly ignored a not insignificant show of opinion against the Buchanan proposals?

notwithstanding the sham of this exercise, the other point is that GCC have consistently fcuked it up with naff clutter. Can we just have a northern European city please?

A very difficult problem to solve. Not the nicest part of Glasgow, chips, vomit and fights. I think the Art School could have a pivotal role here, if they would stop being so insular and start engaging with the community in which they sit.

It has been part of the fabric of Garnethill for a very long time and is considered a pretty good neighbour

I think the art school is very inward looking institution, you only need to look at its new building that offers so little to the surrounding context yet had wonderful interior spaces. Apart from the annual degree show the public doesn't get much of a look in. I think there are massive opportunities with art school campus to make garnethill a better place. It's cyrrently pretty grimy, has Bad public realm and yet sits next to an institution with one of the best environmental art departments in the uk. I don't think the art school is interested in anything as 'porochial' as looking at how it can improve glasgow. While the art scene in glasgow flourishes, I always felt that as a student the city was almost incidental. It was an interesting laboritsry but a stepping ground out to london. There was always a slight distain from the tutors in my year for local students. I think the art school exists on a plain slightly above glasgow.

Oh dear! What do we do with a problem like Sauchiehall st ? Retail is heading East to Buchanan St. Maybe the suggestion to pedestrianise it more and make it a cultural entertainment zone is the best way forward as long as it is well policed. Given our weather we need glass canopies over building fronts/entrances the full length of the street either side to protect us from the rain. May encourage more shoppers not always to seek shelter in the malls. Or widen the pavement areas to allow restaurants to have alfresco dining with retractable electronic canopies similar to those abroad which operate very quickly to cover diners when the rain threatens. We have to work with the weather cause we can't win against it. The waiters of Gran canaria are the best weather men out. They look to the sky and know when to flick the switch.

That'll be the same Councillor Matheson who was promoting the expansion of Buchanan Galleries and in doing so, has pretty much sealed the fate of the west end of Sauchiehall Street.
This is a laudable move to improve the area but they are fighting the tide for sure ...
