V&A at Dundee to move on site next month
Work on Dundee’s waterfront V&A design museum is to get underway next month after BAM Construction were awarded the contract to build the £80.1m centre by Dundee City Council.

The final go-ahead comes despite a near doubling of the estimated budget of the build from £45m, blamed by the contractor on inflation within the construction industry and an underestimate of the expense incurred in delivering the specified shell and cladding.

Doug Keillor, regional director of BAM Construction in Scotland, commented: “This is the most unique construction project that my team have ever been involved in, both in architectural vision and in the way it will be built. It’s challenging, but in a good way. Watching it take shape over the next few years using a combination of local, national and international expertise, will be very satisfying.”

The waterside venue will open its doors to the public in June 2018.

Is this architectural wonder going to have any exhibits in it? Or is the building itself the exhibit? Whatever the case, great to hear about the site start.

What happened to the wee slot views of the tay and landscape between the elegant slabs? Looks like saccoustic baffles in a recording studio... sad loss from the concept.

The penny has dropped for me. It's an Antarctic iceberg. Surely someone has spotted this before?

'Fraid not.
'At the beginning of the 20th Century Antarctica was still an uncharted wilderness. The 1901 British National Antarctic Expedition was the vision of Sir Clements Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society. Scientific in its aims, being the ?rst to reach the South Pole was never one of the objectives. By 1900 Markham had raised the necessary funds, now all he needed was a ship, and a man to lead the expedition.
The Ship
As a major whaling centre Dundeeā€™s shipyards had long experience of constructing ships robust enough to travel through the Arctic pack ice. It was this expertise that Markham harnessed to build RRS Discovery.
Scott RN
Scott applied for the post of expedition leader.

Hi Lost,

Those slot windows are still there, although they aren't immediately apparent in the image. They provide views over the river as you go up the stairs and then there are additional views from the large outdoor terraces, the restaurant and central 2nd floor Michelin Design Gallery.
