Portobello care home goes in for planning
BPA Architects have submitted plans for a 60 bed care home including a café, library and activity spaces at Inchview Terrace, Edinburgh.

Designed on behalf of Care UK the Portobello property will feature dementia friendly gardens designed by Arterre to which all ground floor tenants will have direct access.

Situated on a    disused car dealership the home will minimise bedroom groupings to eight or less to mitigate confusion amongst residents with each flat equipped with its own dining room, lounges and quiet room.

Residents will also have access to terraces and balconies on upper levels, offering views out to Arthur’s Seat and the beach.

In their design statement BPA said: “The proposed mass of the building combined with the mass of the prominent red brick old Technical College opposite will form a ‘gateway’ between the city and Portobello. Our proposals also use red brick to tie in with this context.”
All bedrooms will be wheelchair accessible to allow residents with worsening mobility to remain in familiar surroundings

A profoundly prominent position for such a feculunt, forgettable façade.

Good example of why not to use monopitch roofs on a primary frontage! Might also be better all brick rather than a collage of materials.

This really speaks "care" to me.
How incredibly clunky.
Why did they not photoshop out the dirty old roadsign? Perhaps it helps to break up the massing.

Well it's great to see a care home provider & the architects finally ensuring residents are in small groups - not the cheapest option but by far the best solution for residents. That speaks "care" to me.

@ CADMonkey
It's context. Otherwise, how would you know where it was?
Looks more like a PPPpppp... school from a few years back.
No human scale to the building at all. You would never know that it is a residential building.

Carehome's and sheltered accommodation are obviously very different, so do we know if this one or the other or both? Its all very confusing.
