The Glasgow Institute of Architects has launched an architectural design competition for Springburn Winter Gardens, inviting ideas to transform the ruined Victorian glasshouse into a public space.

Part of an ‘incremental’ approach to full renovation of the A-listed landmark the competition is intended to engage with the local community and raise the profile of the restoration campaign.

In a statement the GIA said: “In 2009 it was estimated that full refurbishment of the structure is feasible and would likely cost around £4.67million. The fundamental issue is to determine a financially viable venture. A number of options have been suggested during the 30 years the structure has lain dormant but none have gained any traction.”

Run in partnership with MAKlab the competition will see all entries received by 21 August 3D printed to form the basis of a touring exhibition from 20 September.   

A £35 entrance fee for practices/individuals and £25 charge for students is applicable. £1,000 will be awarded to the 1st placed scheme with runners-up prizes of £500 for 2nd place and £250 for 3rd place - all of which will be announced in November.

The Springburn Winter Gardens Trust will seek funding to realise the winning design, as such no budget has been set.
