Kirkwall Grammar School officially unveiled
A £41.1m grammar school and halls of residence have been officially unveiled in Kirkwall, Orkney.

Kirkwall Grammar has a capacity of 900 pupils and was built by Morrison Construction to designs by Keppie, who also provided landscape, planning and interior design services, and has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

It is centred on an open street which doubles as a flexible teaching and social space, from which a number of separate teaching wings can be accessed, with pupils also benefiting from a range of new facilities; including a theatre and salon.

Peter Moran, director at Keppie Design, said:  “We wanted to ensure the design demonstrates a considered approach to the local climate. The materials chosen for the building were selected to compliment the local vernacular and to withstand the Orkney climate.”

Centrepiece of the island’s £58m schools investment programme it follows delivery of Stromness Primary by the same team last year.
