Work due to begin on £15m Botanic Garden visitor centre

August 8 2007

Work is to begin within the next few weeks on the new multi-million pound visitor centre at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.

The £15.7 million Gateway project will feature reception and interpretive areas, a shop, restaurant, and classroom as well as facilities linking environmental field workers directly to visitors in Edinburgh via webcam, who can then quiz them on their  work.

The Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment. Richard Lochhead, said: "It is fantastic to see the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh realising a vision and I welcome their enthusiasm and hard work to making the Gateway visitor centre happen. Scotland makes a major contribution to scientific research, tourism and recreation. I warmly welcome this truly outstanding project by the RBGE."
