Elgin’s Alexander Graham Bell Centre opens its doors
A new healthcare teaching facility at the Elgin campus of Moray College has opened its doors following completion by JM Architects.

The Alexander Graham Bell Centre incorporates a life science building containing conference facilities, research space, mock wards and classrooms as well as a new circulation space which connects the building to the ‘B’ listed Academy building. This serves as a new main entrance for the college and takes the form of a double-height glazed gallery link.

A key feature of the design is the inclusion of informal social gathering spaces, intended to promote interaction and discussion via custom-built corridor learning pods and extensive landscaped gardens. A sympathetic relationship with the Academy Building was also required, limiting the height of the extension to three storeys.

Commenting on the design project architect Rod Duncan said: “The relationship to the listed academy building set the precedence for our design and the opportunity to transform the entry and visual connection of the College to the historic fabric of Elgin was critical to our design philosophy.”
