SPT unveil St Enoch station upgrade
SPT have unveiled designs for a new glazed canopy at the entrance to St Enoch Station as part of an ongoing £288m revamp of Glasgow’s ageing subway system.

Designed by Aedas the glass protrusion has been inspired by the great Victorian glasshouses which dominate the city’s parks and will be the most visible element of a £5.3m upgrade of the city centre station.

Beneath the street work will take place to provide new station offices and a travel centre, together with the installation of new lifts, shops along the station concourse and a full strip out of the 1970s interior.

Gary Holmes, regional director for Graham Construction, who are overseeing the work commented: "This will be our second Subway refurbishment contract we worked with SPT to deliver the revamp of Ibrox Station, which was a huge success. We will be using the knowledge gained from the Ibrox project to deliver what will be an iconic new station at St Enoch."

Work on the 15 month build is expected to commence imminently, dovetailing with plans for a matching upgrade of nearby Buchanan Street station.

This is perfect for Glasgow. Inspired I think by National Efforts at Direct Street culture. To be swiftly named the hoodie.

Without trying to sound too negative, I don't really see any of the Kibble's elegance and form in this. Looks clunky. I'd also be interested to see what's planned for the rear of the square.

Looks like someone's taken the london one, canary wharf is it? and just stretched it vertically.. even the base course is identical..

does the glass canopy at buchanan street really need upgrading, and is this realy an imrovement? not for me.. the argyle street one, go mental, do what you want to it, but the buchanan street one has some merit as is..

1st Class, a Big improvement

I think the reference to the Kibble palace is just Archibabel that we get today with modern practices

We shouldn’t let that distract us from what is a smart, efficient design that will be a credit to Glasgow

stef3d - The design will be repeated at the rear of the square.

Chops, i can see that, if you however read the article, it says that an identical one is planned to replace the current buchanan street one, something also highlighted in the previous proposals and aimation.

so, would this really be an improvement to the buchanan street one?

Anyone else thinks this looks like something else?

With the S logo at the top being the Holy Grail??

To me this design looks dodgy. People are bound to try and climb it. A successful assault looks possible from the rear. However I am sure the CDM-C is happy.

Yet again Glasgow is subjected to sub-standard architecture and design. The City deserves more. Poor design, a unfulfilled concept and a structure that fails to compliment it's surroundings.
