Glasgow School of Art refurbishment begins

July 10 2007

Phase I of the £8.7 million refurbishment of the Glasgow School of Art began last week, following more than a decade of fundraising and planning.

The Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project will see the building restored to Mackintosh's original design.

Professor Seona Reid, Director of the GSA, said: "We are delighted that we are now able to start work on the conservation of the building and our extensive collection and archive, making them more accessible to as wide an audience as possible."

The final phase of the refurbishment is due to end in 2009, the centenary of the building's completion, however £1 million of funding has still to be sourced.
