Dumfries Theatre Royal extension secures planning
Dumfries and Galloway Council has awarded planning consent to ARPL Architects to press ahead with the refurbishment and extension of Dumfries Theatre Royal.

Built in 1792 it is the oldest theatre still in use in Scotland but requires extensive modernisation to extend its opening hours, prompting the Guild of Players to commission their future vision for the venue.

Detailed discussions with Historic Scotland saw the green light given to a series of internal alterations alongside an infill extension adjacent to the refurbished main auditorium.

Elsewhere works entail creation of a new public foyer, studio and workshop facilities together with a reorganisation of public spaces to allow the creation of a new studio theatre.

Work is scheduled to start in February for completion within 12 months.
