Merchant City Townscape initiative progresses
The latest phase in a programme of townscape improvement works around Glasgow’s Merchant City have been revealed following façade cleaning works to properties on Bell Street and Wilson Street.

Part of efforts to improve the environmental end economic base of the district by upgrading under used spaces and buildings the initiative aims to spruce up the central district in time for the Commonwealth Games.

Funded by Glasgow City Council, Scottish Enterprise and the Heritage Lottery Fund the scheme offers grants to cover the difference between the cost of the works and subsequent uplift in value of the project.

The works are being carried out in tandem with a number of initiatives designed to improve the city’s public spaces in advance of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

There has been an incredible transformation of these buildings- the above one on Bell Street I have passed many times through the years is almost like a new building.
All buildings in the city should be stripped of that awful industrial paintwork and returned to their original sandstone glory.
Now for the Millennium Hotel in George Square to be cleaned of the tatty peeling paint it has at present so it matches the rest of the honey coloured buildings that surround it.

Too true! Lets revitalise Glasgow buildings and get rid of the dreadful paint that masks their hidden beauty. One building I am curious to see if it has beauty is the old " bennets " building. It is so drap and flaking in paintwork-interesting to know if it could be an attractive building in Glassford Street
