Dundee shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2017
Dundee has been shortlisted alongside Hull, Leicester and Swansea in the race to be named UK City of Culture 2017, successfully seeing off competition from Aberdeen.

It is hoped that the accolade could provide a major fillip to the city which is already in process of major economic and physical change.

Ken Guild leader of Dundee City Council said: “Ours is a people’s bid showcasing our strengths, combined with a desire to take forward a new momentum to encourage even more exciting developments for the population of the city.

“Dundee’s ambition to be City of Culture is based on enthusiastic participation in the arts across our communities.”

That the image chosen to illustrate this story is a generic over-scaled waterside resi block (with portholes!) in front of a preserved but useless dock crane demonstrates everything that's wrong with the 1990s-style model of culture-as-regeneration that still persists here. Does 'culture' really boil down to junk commercial development tied to post-industrial dispossession? Dundee has some amazing cultural assets but the lifeless and weed-strewn 'quarter' along the Victoria Dock - with its parking-dominated frontages, impoverished public realm and total lack of cultural activity - isn't one of them.
