Boroughmuir High School plans unveiled
Plans for a new canal-side High School on the site of Fountainbridge brewery have been unveiled by Edinburgh City Council as part of a public consultation exercise ahead of a full planning application in the autumn.

Designed by Allan Murray Architects, with Buro Happold as structural and building services engineers, the scheme will accommodate up to 1,165 pupils, just 500m from the existing school, and is arranged around a central atrium the scheme will incorporate both traditional classrooms and ‘break out’ spaces for informal learning and will incorporate a rooftop outdoor games area.

A new public park straddling the Union Canal also features prominently in the plans.

Allan Murray said: "This design for Boroughmuir High School retains some of the best aspects of the current school, and seeks to create a welcoming environment with dramatic and inspirational spaces for learning both inside and outside the building."

Subject to approval of the design and budget the new school is expected to move on-site in summer 2014 for completion by summer 2016.

Remains to be seen about the wisdom of rooftop games: I think they will be restricted. Reminds me (don't know why) of 5th Year Physics which was on the top floor at the back. While our teacher was out the room, we noticed the Co-op cuddy attached to the milk dray in the cul-de-sac below, munching away at its nosebag, when someone suggested we try and hit the poor beast with one of the many rubber bungs lying about. Our aim was awry until one lad chucked his, which bounced up off the road and hit the horse square in the knackers, at which point it bolted up the street with the driver chasing after it! Never did find out the name of the callous perpetrator. (Wisnae me)

Now 3 or 4 months behind schedule and to my inexpert eye the brickwork is shoddy, and the whole design lumpen and uninspiring. Looks cheap and nasty but very happy to be proved wrong when it is finished.

This is an example of a style of architecture called "Backofafridgerism".
