Aberdeen theatre redevelopment takes centre stage
Aberdeen based Knight Property Group has revealed plans to transform an empty Union Street theatre into a towering speculative office block.

Designed by Keppie the £30m plan would see the A-listed Capitol Theatre thrust back into the limelight as set scenery for a multi-storey block containing around 70,000 sq/ft of office space, accessible by escalator through the restored art deco foyer.

Knight Property is working closely with Aberdeen City Council and Historic Scotland to retain ‘some’ of the internal features.

James Barrack, director of Knight Property Group said: “This is a significant development for us and it will see one of Aberdeen’s most historic and iconic buildings restored to its former glory. This will assist in the much needed regeneration of Union Street and in turn, bring further benefits for local retailers and suppliers in the surrounding areas.”

Work on the project could start ‘immediately’ once planning consent is obtained with completion pencilled in for December 2014.

...and this is why Dundee and not Aberdeen deserves to succeed in its city of culture bid.

Tarting up the entrance lobby but destroying the rest of the building does not constitute restoration!

Quite agree with #2 - it's pretty disingenuous to talk about restoring it to its former glory when the reality is that the building would be reduced to a mere front porch for a generic spec office development. It's also difficult to see what shoving a bulky office block behind the frontage will contribute to Union Street in urban terms. This looks similar to recent proposals for Royal Exchange Square in Glasgow - is 'stick a tower behind it' a thing now?
