Hadrian’s Wall visitor centre design team announced
Northumberland National Park and the Youth Hostel Association have announced the appointment of Jane Darbyshire and David Kendall Architects to design a new £10.5m visitor centre at Hadrian’s Wall.

The Sill, named after the local Great Whin Sill bedrock, will replace an existing 1960’s facility at Once Brewed near Steel Rigg and aims to improve visitors engagement and experience of the historic monument and surrounding landscape.

Initial design concepts for the centre focus on sustainability, sourcing local materials including a heather thatched pitched roof and whinstone walls but a final design solution isn’t expected until December.

Tony Gates, chief executive of Northumberland National Park Authority, said: “The Sill project will place all of Northumberland National Park and the wider landscapes of the North East on the global map for a whole new set of reasons around its unique and magnificent geographic and geological significance. “

Northumberland National Park has also appointed Gardiner & Theobald LLP as Project Managers/QS, Halcrow Group Ltd as Building Services and Sustainability consultants and Patrick Parsons as Civil and Structural Engineers.
