University of Glasgow draws up £13.4m Hive nightclub plan
The University of Glasgow has drawn up a £13.4m redevelopment plan for a 1960s University Union extension, present home of the Hive nightclub at the junction of Kelvin Way and Gibson Street.

In its place would be built a five storey, 45k sq/ft structure interlinked with the adjacent Stevenson Building, home to the university’s sport and recreation facilities.

Designed by ECD Architects and Page\Park the Stevenson Hive Building would accommodate a new nightclub, four court activity hall, gym and studio space and forms part of part of a wider masterplan which  includes redevelopment of the Western Infirmary site.

Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, said: “The student experience is central to what we offer at the University of Glasgow and this development will greatly enhance both our sporting and social facilities at the Stevenson Building and the Glasgow University Union.

“What will emerge will be a truly dynamic, high-quality facility that will be used and appreciated by staff, students and the wider local community.”

A planning application is expected to be submitted by the end of the month, potentially allowing demolition to take place as early as February 2013.

Should the project be approved work will commence in spring 2013 with completion penciled in for late 2014.

The proposals will go on display in the GUU foyer from today until 26 November and will be published on Urban Realm from tomorrow.

Hi Rem - the design team are still finessing the plans but we should have some artist impressions of the new building tomorrow.

The Western Infirmary masterplan is still at an early stage.

That's great UR, but is it really scheduled for completion in spring 2013 after a February demolition?

Sadly the projects turnaround won't be quite as rapid as that! Demolition completes in the spring but the new build won't be ready until 'late' 2014. Sorry, I should have made that clearer.
