St Andrews boatyard town houses complete
Work to construct three highly insulated town houses in St Andrews has been completed by @rchitects on the site of a former boatyard.

Designed to withstand the severe weather conditions associated with its seafront setting whilst delivering a warm, airtight, living environment the homes feature warm roofs, triple glazing and a whole house mechanical insulation system, as well as a highly insulated woodfibre board cladding.

Utilising off site manufacturing the closed panel timber frame homes are situated in a conservation area and required reconstruction of a collapsed harbour wall.

Paul Fretwell, director at @rchitects Scotland, said: “The breathability and use of natural materials was crucial for us on this project. Moisture is going to be an issue for any building in this climate, so it’s important to use products, such as Pavawall, that can handle it and make sure the internal environment stays healthy.

"Many structures just can’t handle moisture and as buildings become better insulated and more airtight, this has the potential to throw up significant problems.

“These houses also feel very solid, as well as being warm and comfortable, with an even temperature throughout.”

St Rules Boatyard is featured in the Architecture Scotland Annual 2012, published tomorrow.

These look pretty good, although '@rchitects' is a terrible name - can you get around ARB protection of title rules if you substitute symbols for letters?

I don't know Neil, but perhaps someone would like to point it out to the lovely people in Aberdeen who have just posted for an 'Assistant Architect' which I'm fairly sure should legally be 'Architectural Assistant'!!
