Aberdeen Aquatics Centre takes shape
Aberdeen Aquatics Centre is beginning to take shape with erection of a 500 tonne steel frame which will form the skeleton of the new building.

The facility is the latest addition to Aberdeen Sports Village and will incorporate a 10 lane competition standard 50 metre pool alongside a 25m pool with international diving standard facilities.

Designed by Faulkner Browns and built by GRAHAM Construction the £18.2m pool will provide facilities for both elite and community swimmers.

A fundraising drive is currently underway to secure finance for a series of ‘added extras’, including underwater cameras to record swimming techniques from the moment a swimmer leaves the blocks; the first such system of its kind in the UK.

GRAHAM’s site manager Dave Newton, said: “This is the stage where the building really starts to take shape and you can properly appreciate the size and scale of the facility.

“When the initial layer of external cladding is in place, an outer layer will be installed to give the building a signature look, a matt black finish for the main competition pool and changing area and aluminium shingle for the diving pool.”

A joint venture between the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland the centre will be completed by early 2014.

Delighted to see another city at last gain first class sports facilities. Long overdue but I wish other local authorities were so enlightened (although they perhaps don't have the benefit of a University to help).
