Holyrood student housing nears completion

A £15m student housing development at Holyrood Road, Edinburgh, is nearing completion with the finishing touches being applied by construction firm Watkin Jones.

Designed by Oberlanders Architects, Sugarhouse Close will provide 300 student beds at the heart of the Old Town on the site of a former sugar refinery.

A number of listed buildings from this period are retained on the site and are incorporated into the new build which are contained within a new courtyard and close.

New build elements adopt the form of tall, narrow gables to reflect the surrounding form of the historic area.

Misleading photograph - my first reaction was that of horror of this very 'commercial' housing block overbearing on an existing historic building. But when you check the other photographs etc you realise if anything it is the small building that is out of context with the street (not sure planning and historic organisations buy into this concept!). The housing blocks in the background look quite nice, but the foreground shot doesn't really sell this.

Like the idea of the long thin gables though. Will see how this all stacks up when it is finished before the students get to destroy, i mean inhabite, the building!
