Wallace Craigie Works planning application submitted
A planning application for Wallace Craigie Works, a former industrial area on the outskirts of Dundee city centre, has been submitted by Craigie Estates Ltd.

Drawn up by the Voigt Partnership this phased masterplan will initially entail conversion of the B listed ‘Halleys Mill’ into 24 apartments, followed by construction of 150 new build flats on an adjacent plot.

This latter build is intended to respect the existing mill prior to curving upward in height to culminate in a signature circular ‘drum’ building.

Occupying an elevated position this will be prominent in views from the Tay

A covered street will run the length of the development to enhance connectivity and provide access to rear stairwells and lifts whilst an existing stonewall façade will be incorporated at ground floor level to integrate old and new elements

Dundee City Council is looking to contribute a £7.5m public sector borrowing loan facility to assist the provision of 75 new build flats for mid-market rent subject to approval from the Scottish Futures Trust.

Project architect Jonathan Reeve said of the scheme: “It is felt that the proposed development will be a huge success that will revitalise a derelict site and enhance the development of Dundee and greatly improve the local area infrastructure. It illustrates Dundee’s growing confidence in the construction sector and emerging projects that are linked into and boosted by the ongoing waterfront development plans.”

Subject to the necessary approvals construction work could commence as early as the autumn.

"Signature circular 'drum' building"? God help us.

The architect needs to be taken on a trip to the Byker Wall to see how this kind of thing can be made to work. At the moment it's just overbearing and monotonous. A copy of 'Designing Streets' wouldn't go amiss either - the public spaces are rather roads-dominated.

It looks like an overcladding job of some hard to let council flats that should really have been demolished as an eyesore.

Nice visuals. Construction industry desperately needs development like this to get it going again, I'm sure Dundee is no different than the rest of Scotland.

This is most definitely not what the construction industry, or any other industry for that matter, needs; yet another low quality, poorly designed blight on Dundee. Low budget doesn't have to mean low quality. Take Peter Barber's Donnybrook scheme or almost any social housing scheme in the Netherlands: low cost but high quality design is very achievable. The abject lack of ambition in this is woeful.
