Central Building Contractors (Glasgow) Ltd have won a £1.6m refurbishment contract to conduct repair work to Paisley Town Hall and create a new interior space within existing cloisters.

The A listed landmark currently suffers from poor disabled access and deteriorating stonework, prompting Renfrewshire Council to undertake the works.

A new Central Library space will be created within the historic structure to free up the existing library for an expanded cultural centre.

The plans were originally drawn up by Page\Park, architects behind Paisley Vision, a blueprint for the towns future. Austin Smith Lord have subsequently been appointed to develop the scheme.

Renfrewshire councillor Iain McMillan said: "The Victorians gifted us an amazing architectural legacy.

"This refurbishment programme gives us an opportunity to create jobs and training places while also making one of our top entertainment venues much more accessible for people with disabilities.

"It's important to use investment in our architectural heritage to take forward economic regeneration and this programme achieves that aim.”

Refurbishment works are scheduled to complete in October 2013.
