Cumbernauld confounds sceptics to make Civic Pride shortlist
Cumbernauld has surprised many after the recurring Carbuncle town secured a place in the Civic Pride Awards shortlist– an initiative to find Scotland’s best town and neighbourhood.

Seven towns are in contention for the inaugural award, including Broughty Ferry, Dunkeld, East Kilbride, Linlithgow, Peebles and Pitlochry.

Urban Realm editor John Glenday said: “The Civic Pride Awards are really the antithesis to the Carbuncle awards and whilst we have no wish to downplay the horrendous condition of the town centre, or the need for urgent investment, the very real community spirit that exists in Cumbernauld really shone through.

“A town is more than its centre and more than the buildings which constitute it. This is a reflection of the nature of the people who call Cumbernauld home and the strong economy and vibrant suburbs they have built in the face of adversity.

“Big mistakes have been made (and continue to be made) by the council but the enthusiasm and patriotism shown by residents in our poll show that the local spirit is as real and concrete as Cumbernauld Shopping Centre.”

The Civic Pride Awards are a joint initiative between Urban Realm and the Scottish Design Awards, where the winner will be announced on May 25.

Seven neighbourhoods are also going head to head in a separate award, they are: Gorbals, Govan Kelvinside, Leith, Morningside, Partick and Shawlands.

Sometimes a community is much more than it's place.
