Red faced architect resigns over roof tile error
An East Ayrshire Council architect has resigned after specifying the wrong colour of roof tile for a Kilmarnock council estate refurbishment programme.

The unnamed individual was left red faced after being slated by residents for specifying red roof tiles for the work, despite the homes being part of a conservation area where grey slate is the norm.

176 properties were affected by the error, six of which were retiled before the error came to light and will now have to be redone at further expense to the Council.

The architect, employed by the Councils ‘corporate infrastructure service department’ tendered his resignation after local residents complained of incompetence and waste of taxpayers money.

A spokeswoman for the Council explained to the Kilmarnock Standard how the bodged work came about: “As part of an East Ayrshire-wide re-roofing programme, homes within Melville Street and Wilson Avenue were set to benefit from new roofs.

“Unfortunately some council records had not adequately recorded the conservation status of the two streets.”

This seems a bit harsh. We can all make some fundamental errors, but what is the consequence here? No-one was hurt. 6 houses out 176 is an early stage to catch it. Its obviously a substantial contract. Was the contractor or supplier not able to meet at least some of the re-stocking/re-do costs? Ok, so its a bit of a bloomer, but surely the Council could put their hands up, take the flack and highlight how much benefit will come form the finished job. It smacks of a greedy contractor and unsupportive Council if the the offender feels there is no alternative but to fall on his/her sword.

Agree. This reeks of opportunistic staff cuts. How can the arch be at fault for an error in council records.

Incrediblle that an architect makes a "fundemental error" and yet, with no further information to base their assumption, people can state this "smacks of a greedy contractor" C'mon what exactly have the contractor did wrong? and why should they, in a time of incredibly, incredibly tight margins, bear the cost of someone elses error exactly? Mind boggling why people can believe this.
