Planning sought for St Martin’s Church redevelopment
A planning application has been submitted for the re-development of St Martin’s Church, Edinburgh, by Ian Springford Architects for the demolition and rebuild of the 1950s church.

Hit by falling congregation numbers, vandalism and high running costs the church has teamed up with Cruden Homes and Port of Leith Housing Association to have a smaller church building erected on the existing site amidst a development of 23 homes.

Describing the scheme the practice said: “The new block of flats terminates the line of existing four storey flats with the new church reconciling these with the existing single storey bungalows to the west of the site. The new housing is grouped into terraced blocks fronting onto a shared surface. The different buildings are unified by common detailing and a rich multi-coloured facing brick.”

Subject to the necessary consents construction could commence in Spring 2012 for completion in March 2013.
