Lightbulbs could be switched off by luminous walls
Lightbulbs everywhere could be switched off with the introduction of light emitting wallpaper, according to the Carbon Trust.

A chemical coating applied to walls would bask rooms in an even glow, banishing shadows into the darkness once and for all with programmable vibrant light..

Lomox, a Welsh company developing the organic light emitting diode technology, state that such walls would be safe to the touch despite the presence of a very low voltage necessary to stimulate the chemicals.

This allows the technology to be used in locations without mains electricity on objects such as road signs, barriers and flexible screens that can be rolled up after use.

The chemical coating can be applied in the form of pre treated wallpaper or simply be painted directly onto walls, offering prospect of application in televisions, computers and mobile phones.

Awarding the company a £454k grant the Carbon Trust claimed the technology to be two and a half times more efficient than energy saving bulbs. Indoor lighting currently accounts for a sixth of all electricity use.

The product could hit the market by 2012.
