Archiprix comes to Scotland

March 11 2005

It is not often that you get a chance to see the work of a range of the best architectural students throughout the world brought together in one place, which is why Glasgow should feel particularly privileged to be hosting Archiprix. The judges for this year’s competition gathered in Glasgow last month to review the work of students from a wide range of countries, from Japan to Sri Lanka. This year 200 universities from 76 different countries have entered the competition.

An impressive jury made up of Bridget Bain, Gross Max landscape architects; Ian Gilzean, Scottish Executive; Zvi Efrat, partner at Efrat-Kowalsky Architects, Tel Aviv, and Head of School of Architecture, Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem; Gilles Saucier, Saucier + Perrotte, Canada; and Professor Hitoshi Abe, Dr Eng, Department of Architecture and Building Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, met in Glasgow last month. The judges were impressed with the range and variety of work, but commented that the work was more practical than the idealism one might expect from the international student body.

In June the Mackintosh School of Architecture will host Archiprix International student workshops led by architects from Denmark, England, Netherlands, Norway and Scotland. From 24 June–7 August, an exhibition of the best work will be on show at the Lighthouse, and an awards ceremony and lecture will be held at Glasgow City Chambers on Friday, 24 June, at lunchtime. The entries for the current competition can be viewed at www.archiprix.org. The competition was launched by NAI in 2001, in Rotterdam. Since then Hunter Douglas has come on board as a sponsor. In 2003 the judging and exhibition was held in Istanbul.
