The Scottish Design Awards judges panel, chaired by Terry Farrell, met in March to select the winning projects. An exhibition of the contenders will be on show on 5 April at the CCA, Glasgow and the results will be announced at the SDA dinner on Friday 27 May at Moat House, Glasgow.

RMJM and Noah Developments have submitted proposals for the conversion of the Express building at Park Circus into a residential block. The concrete block is not an example of Scotland’s best post-war architecture and would be hardly missed, but not all local residents have welcomed the plans. Meanwhile Stewart Milne is involved in discussion with the planners about the revival of their scheme for Park Quadrant, watch this space.

Gareth Hoskins Architects has won a competition to design a £1.2 million visitor’s reception at Edinburgh Castle. Hoskins has also announced that one of its architects, Nick Domminney, has become one of only 13 architects to receive RIAS Accreditation in Sustainable Design and Construction.

Cumbernauld has been having another hard time in the press recently, after it emerged that many of its own residents had voted for the entire town centre to be demolished as part of a new Channel 4 programme, Demolition. Cumbernauld was voted Scotland’s Most Dismal Town in Prospect’s Carbuncle Awards in 2002.

John Spencely is to give a lecture on the Scottish Parliament at the University of Strathclyde’s Architecture Department on 17 March.The event is organised by the CBE and is free - to book, call 0141 249 9888 or visit www.cbe.org.uk.

Steve Inch has been appointed as Director of Development and Regeneration Services at Glasgow City Council. Malcolm Cooper has moved from English Heritage North-West to replace Richard Emerson at Historic Scotland.
