Stairway to heaven

Stairway to heaven
Edinburgh City Council have undertaken restoration work to their main council debating chamber and stairwell.

Smith Scott Mullan Associates worked on the scheme in collaboration with project managers Thomas & Adamson restoring key period features whilst rethinking connectivity to improve flexibility of use whilst respecting original floor plans.

Painstaking work involved taking paint scrapings to reflect the original 1904 colour scheme, restoring a stained glass dome and friezes, designing replica light fittings and restoring furniture.

Works were not a slavish reproduction of what had gone before however with a contemporary flavour imparted to the 10 storey stairwell with specially commissioned wallpaper and glass panels depicting the evolution of Edinburgh.
