Kilmacolm boasts some of Scotland's best known examples of Arts & Crafts design, including the much celebrated Windy Hill by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Theis tradition is continued at a new housing development on the Avenel Estate.

Boasting verdant landscaped gardens and woodland attributable to the late Wallace Forrester, his family were left with a garden legacy that had taken almost four decades to create and a determination to see it flourish still.

Concerned that the sale of the estate might result in over development, the family took the bold decision to undertake the design and building work themselves.  

Working in close collaboration with both Hugh Petter, director of Robert Adam Architects and Thomas Robinson Architects, five Arts and Crafts houses inspired by Austin Laird’s original Avenel design created in 1928 have been built, each incorporating existing features of the landscape such as the Forrester’s Japanese garden.

Traditionally built with honey blonde sandstone dressings and topped with a slate roof, the homes nevertheless boast the latest technology.  A highly efficient heating system boasts under floor piped hot water working in tandem with state-of-the-art ventilation and heat recovery equipment.  The house also has the latest in integrated appliances and home automation allowing the owners to remotely operate, for example, security and home entertainment systems.
